Art
TAIKURTINNA MURAL
Taikurtinna is the Kaurna word for family. In 2008, Kaurna Plains School
received an Artist – in Schools Grant from Carclew Youth Arts to continue work with
artist James (Jimmy) Dodd.
The secondary students were working on the fertile question “What is family?” to inform learning inquiry during Semester 1, 2008. Kaurna language has a rich vocabulary relating to family members. Students felt that family had a wider, deeper meaning inclusive of animals, plants and the land.
Their ideas were translated into this clay tile artwork. This saw great skill development from the early practice tiles to the shared work completed by all year levels.
This artwork is displayed in the conference room at Kaurna Plains School.
